This magnificent Mahalaxmi temple of Kolhapur, Maharashtra (India) exhibits the marvelousness of Hemadpanthi style of architecture which dates back to Kannada Chalukya empire and was first built in the 7th century.
What left me in awe was how symmetrically each of its pillars and columns were carved out of black stones (can be seen in the photograph above) in the age which was not known to any modern technology and sculpting equipments. With just skilled hands and hammers and chisels a super symmetrical structure was erected which in todays date stands an extraordinary example of human creation.
If we think of reconstructing such pieces with the assistance of our so called modern technologies, I would say it’ll still be impossible to recreate the exact.
This was also the first temple that I visited which had only female pujaris.
Unfortunately I could just capture a glimpse of this majestic piece of super structure with my lens, as photography was prohibited inside the temple.
